A look back at a big year for Rock Electrical's marine division, from complete vessel rewires and custom control systems to an auto baiter install and a world-first desalination project.

It has been a massive year for our marine electrical services division. Work has ranged from routine repairs and compliance inspections through to complete vessel rewires and custom-built control systems, across both commercial and recreational boats in southern Tasmania.

Here is a look back at where we have been and what we have been working on.

Auto baiter install aboard the Petuna Endeavour

One of the largest and most technical jobs of the year was the installation and commissioning of a new MUSTAD Autoline Auto Baiter system aboard the fishing vessel Petuna Endeavour.

The system automatically cuts squid and baits hooks at a rate of up to three hooks per second. Our scope covered the full job, from decommissioning the old system through to new control cabling and LAN runs from bow to stern, a new main enclosure, custom-built control stations at the hauler and bridge, a new bridge HMI console, and final testing and compliance documentation.

You can read the full breakdown on the Petuna Endeavour project page.

A world-first desalination project

The other standout was our marine electrical work on Blue Carbon's oPod Aqua, an off-grid floating desalination system tethered in Okehampton Bay. The pod went on to be named one of just 20 semi-finalists in its category of the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition, and is the only Australian entrant in that category.

We were proud to be named among the deployment partners on the project. There is more on that one in our write-up on Rock Electrical helping power a world-first Tasmanian desalination project.

Across the rest of the fleet

Alongside the headline jobs, the year covered a wide spread of marine work:

  • AMSA vessel inspections
  • Hot water system repairs
  • Vessel-wide lighting upgrades, including bow storage, engine room, mast and deck lighting
  • Bilge alarms, bridge alarm sirens and bilge pump upgrades
  • Navigation lighting repairs and upgrades
  • Custom-built generator and shore connection changeover enclosures
  • Remote-controlled, height-adjustable access gantry control system
  • Laser bird deterrent system installation
  • Three-phase motor rebuild
  • Replacement of multiple alternators
  • Bow thruster control repairs
  • Custom-built ice machine and refrigeration control system
  • Yacht deck winch installation
  • Alternator fault-finding and AVR control system replacement
  • Battery system load testing
  • Anchor winch rebuild
  • Generator control system repairs and rewiring
  • Desalination system repairs
  • Complete vessel rewiring
  • Alternator load testing

Looking ahead

From small fault-finding jobs through to complex automation, power generation and desalination projects, we have enjoyed helping keep Tasmania's commercial and recreational vessels running safely and reliably.
